Description of the attraction
In the Plaza de San Agustin in Cordoba, there is the old church of St. Augustine. The construction of this Gothic-style structure was begun in 1328 and completed seven years later, in 1335.
Today's appearance of the church is different from what it was after the completion of construction. The original building of the church looked stricter and more restrained, but in the first third of the 17th century, restoration work was carried out in the church, tk. its building is dilapidated and its appearance has been slightly altered.
The facade of the building is decorated with a beautiful high bell tower, built in the 16th century and decorated with pilasters, balustrades and other decorative elements.
The interior of the Church of San Agustin amazes with its splendor. High vaults and walls are decorated with unique frescoes, gilded patterns, openwork elements and paintings dedicated to biblical themes. The altars, skillfully crafted by consummate craftsmen and also richly decorated, match the stately interior.
During the invasion of the French in the early 19th century, the church of San Agustin suffered significant damage. After that, the building of the church was tried several times to restore. In the period between 1981 and 1984, the restoration of the roof and walls of the transept on the south side was carried out. In 2003, the northern and southern facades, library, altars were restored. Restoration work, carried out since 2006, has returned the former grandeur and brightness of colors to the interior of the church. On October 9, 2009, the doors of the church reopened to the parishioners.
