Description of the attraction
Urbis is a large modern exhibition center in Manchester. It was opened in June 2002 as part of the reconstruction of the Exchange Square (Millennium Quarter). The building has seven floors. Inspection of the exposition begins at the very top, where tourists are taken by an elevator. To maintain a comfortable temperature in the building, the most modern technologies are used: adiabatic cooling in summer and a heat preservation system in winter.
Initially, Urbis was conceived as a museum telling about the life of the city, this exposition was located on five floors, and two more were given for various exhibitions and changing exhibitions. But the exposition turned out to be unattractive for tourists, the attendance was extremely low, and the museum became a burden for the city. In 2004, the decision was made to change the status of Urbis and from a museum it turned into an exhibition center dedicated to British pop culture, while the emphasis remains on the events of Manchester. The museum authorities canceled the entrance fee and the number of tourists began to grow.
In 2010, Urbis was closed to visitors. The football museum was moved here from the city of Preston in Lancashire. The museum reopened in July 2012.
