Description of the attraction

The Archaeological Museum in the city of Hisar was founded in 1933. This year the Archaeological Society was founded in Hisarya in order to preserve the cultural monuments of the city. Reserve General Todor Markov was elected to the post of chairman of this organization. In the same year, he opened an archaeological exhibition in his own villa.

In 1953, Todor Markov presented the collection of exhibits he had collected to the city. This collection became the basis for the Archaeological Museum that opened in Hisar. A scientific group was created to carry out archaeological excavations in the city. As a result, most of the buildings of the ancient city were discovered: residential buildings, baths, a fortress wall.

Since 1955, the museum has moved to the building where it is located to this day. After expansion in 1976, an ethnographic exhibition appeared in it, which acquaints visitors with the peculiarities of the life and way of life of the local population. Among the exhibits you can see examples of traditional costumes, dishes, tools, jewelry, etc.

Today the Archaeological Museum houses five exhibition halls, a lapidarium and a courtyard. The main exhibition presents items from the Neolithic, Antique and Thracian periods. Part of the museum is an archaeological reserve - an open-air area where the ruins of ancient buildings are located. The lapidarium contains samples of ancient writing on stone slabs, including gravestones.
