Description of the attraction

Until the end of the 19th century, the Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd) embankment served as a large cargo port and consisted of berths and storage facilities. At the beginning of the 20th century, an attempt was made to improve the upper tier of the embankment by planting trees, making slopes and installing a staircase to the marinas. But as a result of a landslide in 1913, everything was destroyed. In the 1930s, the embankment was reconstructed: the slopes were greened and the passage along the entire coastal section of the city was asphalted, becoming the best at that time among the cities of the Volga region. During the Battle of Stalingrad, at the cost of incredible efforts, the 62nd Army defended the coastal territory, where the supply of ammunition and the evacuation of civilians was carried out, for which later the embankment of the hero-city of Volgograd was named the "62nd Army".

From 1952 to 1954, the embankment destroyed by military actions was rebuilt, the facades were restored and supplemented with new architectural elements. The project of the new embankment was created by a group of architects led by V. Simbirtsev. In 2001, John the Baptist Church was rebuilt, one of four churches destroyed in the thirties.

Today, the Volgograd embankment has a length of 3.5 km, one and a half of which includes the river station and the main entrance to the city - the central staircase with propylaea. The following attractions are located on the embankment: a monument to sailors-rivermen, a colonnade, a rotunda and terraces, a monument to Peter the Great and Saints Peter and Fevronia, the Friendship of Peoples fountain and many other memorable places. The central embankment is a popular resting place for residents of Volgograd and guests of the city.
