Description of the attraction
Kolmanskop ghost town is located ten kilometers from the city of Luderitz. In 1908, railway worker Zacharius Levala found a sparkling stone in the sand near the railway. His discovery was the beginning of the Kolmanskop diamond rush. Over the next decade, Kolmanskop developed into a vibrant European city, a small paradise of German culture. Large beautiful houses, a school, a stadium, a swimming pool were built. The well-equipped hospital boasted the first X-ray machine in Africa. The discovery of new, richer diamond deposits put an end to the city's prosperity. The people left him and the desert began inexorably to attack the city. In 1980, some of the buildings were restored and Kolmanskop found a new life, but now as a museum.
