Description of the attraction

Zurich Zoo is located in the Fluntern district. It can be reached by cable car or tram. The idea of establishing a zoo in Zurich came about in 1925, when the city received two lions as a gift. The city authorities have been pondering for a long time what to do with them. Only three years later, the lions were transported to the newly built zoological garden. On its territory, which was planned to be expanded in the future, there were several large buildings: aviaries, an aquarium, a terrarium, a cage for monkeys, pavilions for elephants and bears. During the first week of the zoo's work, it was visited by more than 20 thousand guests.

The first years of the Zurich zoo's existence were challenging. Exotic animals were sick, freezing in cold winters, and then World War II broke out. The zoo management borrowed money from the city and the canton to preserve its inhabitants.

In the 80s of the last century, the expansion and reconstruction of all buildings on the territory of the zoo took place. An African pavilion for hippos and rhinos and a new large house for monkeys and elephants were built.

In 1955, the total number of visitors to the zoo exceeded one million. Then there was a decline in interest in the zoo, and only in the 80s, when two cubs were born to a couple of local lions, who were named Komali and Panang, there was again no end of visitors.

The entire territory of the zoo is divided geographically. There are already spacious pavilions called "South American Misty Mountain Forest", "Masuala Rainforest", where night excursions are often arranged, "European Pavilion", "Dry Forest of India". In the future, they plan to build buildings where the conditions of the South American rainforest, African rainforest, savannahs, and the Asian desert will be recreated. The zoo contains about 2,200 animals of 380 species.
