The Republic of Korea is unofficially called the Land of Morning Freshness, because its inhabitants are among the first on the planet to enter a new day. Its economy is considered one of the most developed in the world, and the level of income of the population is high in comparison with other countries of the South Asian region. Korean exoticism does not attract foreigners from Europe too much, and therefore the question of how to move to South Korea is mainly asked by potential immigrants from the countries surrounding the republic. Russian citizens go to Korea for permanent residence very rarely, but nevertheless, compatriot immigrants in Seoul and other cities are sometimes found.

Where to begin?

If you are going to visit the Country of Morning Freshness for tourist purposes for a period not exceeding 60 days and are a citizen of Russia, you will not need an entry visa. A longer stay is only possible with a long-term visa of the category corresponding to your purpose.

Long-term visas of types D, E and H are issued to foreigners intending to study in South Korea, persons officially employed in the country and those who are on a long-term work or scientific trip. A long-term visa is required for all foreigners who have immigration intentions and plan to legally reside in the country for a long time.

A residence permit is issued on the basis of a visa and other documents confirming the purpose of a foreign citizen's stay in Korea. For the first time, it is valid for three years, after which the residence permit will have to be extended or the procedure for obtaining a resident status with a permanent residence permit begins.

Legal ways to move to South Korea for permanent residence

The grounds for obtaining a temporary residence permit in Korea may be work or study in the Land of Morning Freshness, but in reality there are only two ways to obtain citizenship:

  • Make a career and rise to the position of the head of a large international enterprise. Top managers of this level receive citizenship on special grounds. Outstanding athletes, scientists or cultural figures who have chosen South Korea as their place of permanent residence can be classified in this category of applicants with real chances of obtaining citizenship of the country.
  • Marry a Korean or Korean. The foreign spouse is immediately issued a temporary residence permit, which, after a three-year period, can be exchanged for resident status or citizenship.

All works are good

The Korean economy is based on heavy industry and, in particular, mechanical engineering and services, which in the past decade have come to dominate other industries. The country's economy has been growing at an accelerated pace in recent years, and therefore labor immigration to South Korea is gaining momentum.

Qualified specialists in the field of IT technologies, workers in the tourism industry, builders of various specialties, technologists-chemists, radio engineers and electronics engineers, designers are especially in demand in the state. Foreign men are invited to work in textile and clothing factories, furniture factories, and seafood processing. Women's hands are in demand in confectionery and clothing industries.

The employer draws up an employment contract for the foreign worker of interest, which serves as the basis for issuing a long-term visa. Most often, a Korean company pays for hired foreign specialists for courses of studying the national language, flight and visa processing. Sometimes the employer helps financially and in search of housing.

Business people

Investing in the South Korean economy is a legal way to obtain a residence permit and stay in the country for permanent residence. In the beginning, a business person will have to open a long-term C-2 visa. On its basis, a foreigner can enter the country in order to create his own enterprise or establish partnerships with Korean colleagues. The price of the issue is from 225 thousand euros. This is exactly how much it takes to invest in the Korean economy to obtain a residence permit.

A temporary residence permit is issued for a period of one year, after which it is extended. The conditions for the renewal are the profitability of the company and the creation by the businessman of a sufficient number of jobs for the citizens of South Korea.

You will be declared husband and wife

Marrying a citizen or citizen of the Republic of Korea is one of the fastest ways to obtain resident status or citizenship. The necessary and sufficient conditions for this are to live legally in Korea for three years, fulfill all the requirements of the migration legislation and prove to the authorities the sincerity of the marriage intentions. Any suspicion that the family was created fictitiously will be the reason for close scrutiny and investigation by the migration authorities. Confirmed fears will serve as a pretext for immediate deportation.

Think for yourself, decide for yourself

If you decide to start the naturalization process in South Korea, but the reason for it is not marriage with a citizen of the country, you will first have a five-year period of residence with a temporary residence permit. Then the immigrant will have to pass an exam on the knowledge of the Korean language, history and customs of the country. An important condition for obtaining citizenship of the Republic of Korea is the absence of problems with the law and the availability of a permanent job and stable income.

Dual citizenship in South Korea is legally allowed to have only in the most exceptional cases. The former citizenship will be allowed to be retained by outstanding athletes, scientists or artists. All other immigrants will have to give up their existing citizenship of another country when applying for a Korean passport.

The fact of birth in the Country of Morning Freshness does not automatically imply citizenship, but if at least one of the parents is a citizen of the state, the child will be issued his passport.
