Two small European regions, united into one power, still cannot create worthy competition for their neighbors, Croatia and Montenegro, in terms of tourism. Excursions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, like other types of recreation and entertainment, are still gaining momentum.
There were many reasons hindering the development of tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the military conflict in the Balkans, which in one way or another affected all countries in the region. The difficult flight and the need for a visa also limited tourists in their desire to visit the country. Today the situation has moved forward, Russian travelers can stay in the country for 30 days without a visa, charter flights are being organized. Therefore, excursion tourism will gain momentum, there are enough worthy objects here.
Thematic excursions in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Like other countries located in this region, Bosnia and Herzegovina is lucky with natural data. Amazingly beautiful landscapes, mountain ranges alternating with picturesque valleys, rivers and lakes have a high tourist potential.
The second important direction of excursions in this country is historical, there are many monuments of ancient Balkan history that belong to different periods and peoples. City excursions in time take from an hour to several hours, taking into account small areas, most often on foot. If the route is combined (auto plus on foot), then the program includes visits to several settlements and natural attractions.
The old town has survived in Sarajevo, which was founded in the 13th century; to this day, you can see old houses, narrow, crooked streets, colorful markets, majestic mosques and temples. Of the important attractions of Sarajevo, tourists like to visit the following objects:
- Moritsa Khan, an inn that has survived from the Ottoman rule;
- Latin Bridge, which became the site of the tragic death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (which caused the outbreak of the First World War);
- A yellow fortress located on a hill with an amazing view of the city.
Other cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina are also interesting for exploring, each with its own unique history, preserved masterpieces of architecture and historical landmark sites.
City walks
Bosnia and Herzegovina is such a small country that a few hours are enough to drive it from north to south. On the other hand, if you delve a little into history, then you can spend several days in a tiny town. For example, in the town of Mostar there is an object that has the significance of a world historical monument, this is the Old Bridge, built in 1566. Interestingly, not only tourists come to see it, but also the museum, which is dedicated to the history of this engineering structure.
And the city itself is unusual, it is located on both banks of the Neretva, which seemed to divide it into Catholic and Muslim. Therefore, a walk through one area acquaints with the monuments of Islamic culture, a trip through the area on the other side of the river is quite European.
In the same city, the Historical Museum is located, the expositions of which, first of all, reflect the life of Herzegovina, past and present. Of the other attractions of Mostar, tourists highlight the mosque, called Mehmet Pasha, and the Ottoman mansion. A walk around the city takes 2-3 hours, its cost is from 100 € with a small company.
You can continue the excursion in the vicinity, 10 kilometers from Mostar is the Dervishes Monastery, another interesting tourist attraction. In addition to the car, you can also take a boat trip along the Buna River, which is famous in the country for its beautiful waterfalls, but the most famous waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina is Kravice.
The town of Trebin has its own places of worship, for example, the church with the complex name Hercegovachka-Gracanica, revered at the level of a shrine among the Serbs. The Zhitomislich Monastery is located in the picturesque valley of the Neretva River; the Kravice waterfall can be distinguished from the attractive natural sites.
The main attraction of tourists in the town of Trebin is the Old Town, the historical center, which was built by the Turks in their time. The market is located in the central square of the city; it retains a colorful atmosphere that has changed little over the centuries.
A characteristic feature of the excursion routes along Trebinje is a combined character, that is, during the excursion, tourists get acquainted with the historical sights and modern cultural life, admire the natural landscapes and taste the local grape wine. Such a walk will take much longer (up to 6 hours), will cost from 20 € per person, but will give you many pleasant and tasty minutes.
