The amazing island off the southeastern coast of the African continent is still quite rare among the popular tourist destinations of Russian travelers. But those who are lucky enough to visit it will never forget the magnificent natural attractions - national parks, unique plants, geysers and waterfalls of Madagascar.

It's worth seeing

The most popular waterfalls among tourists on the island of Madagascar are located in the north, east and southeast of the country:

  • Mahamanina is a sixty-meter waterfall in the north of the island in the Diana region. From the city of Ambanya, you should drive 15 km along the national road N6.
  • Sakaleona is a record-breaking waterfall. It is the tallest among the waterfalls in Madagascar. The water stream falls from 200 meters. Located in the east of the island, 18 km from the village of Ampashinambo and 107 km from the town of Nosi Variko.
  • Riandahy on the Zomandao River is next to Andringitra National Park. A kilometer away, the stream of the Rianbavy falls falls.
  • In the Marojejy National Park in the northeast of the island, tourists tend to visit the Humbert Falls. It is located 4, 3 km from the entrance to the park.
  • Not far from the Namarona Park, on the river of the same name, the Andriamamovoka waterfall is making noise.

Sad Legend of Madagascar Falls

One of the most visited sites on the island is Lili Falls, located just off the road connecting the town of Ampfi and Andasibe. The sign "Le Chute de la Lily" in French warns you to turn off the highway near the village of Antafofo and drive about 2 km along the gravel road to the waterfall.

Legend has it that in the middle of the last century, a foreigner lived in Antafofo with a small daughter. Her name was Lily. Once she went to swim at the waterfall and did not return. The inconsolable father looked for her for many days and in honor of the missing baby, the locals named one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Madagascar after her.

The entrance to the Lily Falls is paid, its price for foreigners is 2,000 Malagasy Ariari, which corresponds to approximately $ 0.70. Parking for a rented car will cost half the price. The facility is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Tourist notes

When traveling through the waterfalls of Madagascar and the island's national parks, carry an adequate supply of drinking water and food for a snack. In these places, there is usually no bottled water for sale, and the state of the catering leaves much to be desired.
