In accordance with state requirements, all motor vehicles that move on the Bulgarian roads are required to pay the cost of the vignette, that is, to acquire an official permit to travel through the territory of the country. The exception is motorcycles, which can be driven on any road in Bulgaria free of charge. It should be emphasized that foreigners can travel around Bulgaria not only for a fee, but also free of charge. Such roads, which do not require the purchase of a vignette, are: urban roads; circuit roads; ring roads.

Today, the cost of using the roads in Bulgaria depends on the category to which the vehicle belongs, as well as on the duration of travel through the country.
Vignettes can be purchased at any time of the day at special points of sale, as well as at border checkpoints. The purchased vignette should be affixed in the lower right corner behind the glass. For convenience, the information on the vignette is presented in three languages: Bulgarian, English, German. When purchasing a vignette, three types of it are offered: permission for seven days, for one month, for one year.
Special payment for travel in Bulgaria
Attention should be paid to special payment for travel on certain sections of roads in Bulgaria. These are some bridges, as well as ferries. Vehicle owners need to pay for the following sections:
- bridges between cities: Ruse (Bulgaria) - Giurgiu (Romania); Vidin (Bulgaria) - Calafat (Romania).
- ferries connecting the following cities: Silistra (Bulgaria) and Calarasi (Romania); Nikopol (Bulgaria) and Turnu Magurele (Romania); Oryahovo (Bulgaria) and Bechet (Romania); Svishtov (Bulgaria) and Zimnicea (Romania).
Recently, the Silistra-Calarasi ferry has been very popular with travelers. This ferry can transport twenty vehicles at a time. In the summer season, ferries run depending on the load, and at other times every two hours.
