Tel Aviv today is one of the largest cities in this relatively young state. But the history of the city began with Jaffa, an ancient Jewish settlement on the Mediterranean coast. In fact, being a suburb, today it has taken the place of an economic, scientific and cultural center.
Founding of Tel Aviv
The founding date of Tel Aviv is considered to be 1909, the original name of the new Jewish quarter in the city of Jaffa - Akhuzat Bait. Moreover, people have lived here since time immemorial; today, on the territory of the modern city, you can find traces of the ancient Philistines, who once founded the settlement of Tel Kasil.
A year later, ferment began in the quarter over the choice of a new toponym, many prominent political and cultural figures tried to submit their proposals, to carry out their symbolic names. May 1910 was remembered by residents of the appearance of the name Tel Aviv. There are variants of translation of the toponym from Hebrew, as "hill of rebirth" or even more poetic - "hill of spring".
Heyday of the city
The significant expansion of the borders of Tel Aviv and the increase in the number of inhabitants is associated, first of all, with Jewish emigrants who were persecuted and arrived from different parts of the world. Here one can note such events of a global scale: the coming to power of the Nazis in Germany; return to their historical homeland of Jews from Russia, Ukraine and Poland.
And Tel Aviv began to transform almost before our eyes, and the development was carried out according to the plan, under the guidance of famous architects. Today the so-called "White City" is under the tutelage of specialists from UNESCO.
Unique city
In 1948, the most important event in the history of the country took place - the proclamation of the formation of Israel, a new state. The first mayor of Tel Aviv was Meir Dizengoff, and the People's Council was headed by David Ben-Gurion.
In 1950, another important event for Tel Aviv took place - the unification with Jaffa, the emergence of a new administrative entity called Tel Aviv-Jaffa. The growth process continued and later, gradually other small cities located in its vicinity joined the capital.
The story of Tel Aviv, summarized, does not end there. Today it is considered the most eclectic of the state's settlements. At the same time, you can see here a corner of Paris and streets of Manhattan, a piece of old Berdichev and exotic Casablanca.
