The administrative capital of the Oryol region is located on the Central Russian Upland at the confluence of the Orlik River into the Oka. A fortress for protection from the enemy was founded here in the middle of the 16th century by order of Ivan the Terrible, and a little later, on the right bank of the Oka, where one of the embankments of the Orel is now, the construction of a Cossack settlement began.
Along the river banks
There are four embankments in Oryol in total, and since 2014 intensive work has been underway on the construction of another one - named after Yesenin:
- The Children's Park is set up on the left bank of the Orlik River.
- Orlik's right bank embankment is decorated with Kommunalnikov Square and Epiphany Cathedral.
- The left bank of the Oka River overlooks the Strelka, to the monument in honor of the 400th anniversary of the Eagle.
- The Dubrovinsky embankment stretches along the right Oka bank from the intersection with Novosilskaya street to the Herzen bridge.
The Yesenin Embankment will be built on the right bank of the Orlik River opposite the eastern part of Victory Park.
Eagle Green Belt
Oryol is one of the greenest Russian cities. In its parks overlooking the banks of the rivers, both guests of the city and local residents love to relax. For example, the Dvoryanskoe Nest square on the left bank of the Orlik was opened in May 1903 by the local society of fine arts lovers. According to legend, it was here that a noble estate was located, described by Turgenev in some of his works. For many years the garden served as a resting place for Orlov residents. Amateur performances and concerts were staged there. Today the landscape park has been declared a protection zone.
Another favorite place for walks among the Orlov residents is the city PKiO on the banks of the Oka. The idea of its creation appeared at the beginning of the 19th century with the then governor. Today in the park of culture and recreation there are attractions and various events are organized during the City Day and other holidays.
The oldest in the city
The Epiphany Cathedral on the Oryol embankment is the oldest stone building in the city. It was founded in the 17th century and was built in the Baroque style with elements of classicism. The Epiphany Church is the only one that has survived since the existence of the Oryol Fortress. These fortifications were the historical core of the city, and the bell tower of the temple was the tallest building in the area.
The temple was successfully restored in 2015 and for the first time since 1919, bells rang from its belfry.
