One of the cities, located on the Crimean peninsula, for many Russians is associated with beautiful nature, good rest, preserved monuments of ancient culture. The history of Feodosia dates back to the 6th century BC.
Foundation of Feodosia
It is believed that Greek colonists had a hand in the founding of the city. The period of formation was very difficult, the location of the settlement in a good place led to numerous wars for its possession. For example, in the 4th century AD, the settlement, which at that time had the name Ardabda, was destroyed by the Huns. Following them, the Byzantines ruled in these territories, then the Khazars, the Golden Horde also established its power. The same continued in the future, historians identify several important periods in the history of Feodosia:
- Genoese period associated with the formation of the city of Kaffa and its heyday;
- Ottoman period (since 1475), when the city got a new symbolic name Little Istanbul;
- The period of existence as part of the Russian Empire.
Feodosia was taken by attack by Russian troops in 1771, from that moment the life of the city changed. In 1778, it was visited by the great empress Catherine II, she was very upset that the beautiful city was practically in ruins.
The visit of a state official changed the attitude towards the settlement, measures were taken to restore, build, and develop. This contributed to the increase in the number of residents. The nature, climate, the seaside contributed to the transformation of the city into a place of recreation, where guests from different parts of the Russian Empire began to come.
New century - new life
The revolutionary events changed the life of the townspeople, Feodosia after 1917 experienced the same problems as the whole country. Among the sad, tragic events - famine, repression, change of power, finally the power of the Soviets in Feodosia was established only in 1920.
It is very difficult to describe the history of Feodosia briefly at this time, since events change very quickly, each of them is important and has an impact on the further development of the city. 1941 to 1944 Feodosia was occupied by the Germans, this is another tragic period in her life.
The post-war period opened up new horizons for the city, obtaining the status of a resort made it possible to significantly improve the infrastructure, expand the hotel base, and create comfortable conditions for recreation.
