An interesting fact is that the question of creating a new heraldic symbol of one of the most legendary cities in Russia arose only after it was awarded the high title of "Hero City". Perhaps that is why the coat of arms of Volgograd looks so modern, it completely lacks elements that are associated with the Russian Empire. On the contrary, all the elements present in the image are in one way or another connected with the Soviet regime, its symbols.
Description of the heraldic sign of Volgograd
After the city received the great title, the question arose about a new heraldic symbol, a special competition was announced. In its conditions, it was stipulated that the new coat of arms of Volgograd should symbolically reflect labor and military exploits, the work of townspeople in peacetime.
The most interesting thing is that it was not possible to determine the winner of the competition; as a result, a group of artists was instructed to finalize one of the submitted works. The new heraldic symbol was approved in March 1968.
A color photo of the Volgograd coat of arms conveys the richness, brightness of the colors and shades used. The golden shield is divided into fields horizontally, their colors coincide with the colors of the ribbon of the famous Russian award associated with this city - the medal, which has the symbolic name "For the Defense of Stalingrad".
In the upper field of the shield, the battlements of the fortress are schematically drawn, they symbolize the inaccessibility of the city, the readiness for defense. The battlements of the fortress wall are red, which in heraldry is associated with strength, energy, courage, blood shed for the homeland. There is also a medal named "Gold Star".
The lower field of the shield is painted in azure color, against this background are two symbols that can be attributed to the local industry and agriculture. This is a gear and a sheaf of wheat, both of which are depicted in gold. The color of the shield is associated, first of all, with the great Volga, on which the city stands.
Through the pages of history
It is clear that the modern coat of arms is not the only heraldic symbol that was near the city, which has changed its name several times during its long history. The heraldic symbols of Tsaritsyn, Stalingrad, Volgograd also changed.
In 1854, the first coat of arms of Tsaritsyn was approved, the following elements were depicted on it: in the upper azure field, three sterlets, facing each other with their heads; in the lower scarlet field there are two crossed sterlets.
Heraldry connoisseurs will immediately recognize the coat of arms of Saratov, depicted at the top of the shield. Fish emphasize the water resources of the Volga, indicate the main business of the inhabitants of Tsaritsyn.
