The rivers of Lithuania belong to the Baltic Sea basin and have a rather ramified system.
Sventoji river
Sventoji is a river in Lithuania, which is the largest tributary of the Viliya River. Its length is 246 kilometers. The source is Lake Sammaris (the territory of the Grazute Regional Park), and it flows into the waters of Vilija near the town of Ionava.
The main tributary of Sventoji is the Shirvinta. The river bed passes through the territory of three cities: Anyksciai; Kavarskas; Ukmerge.
Viliya river
Viliya passes through the territory of Belarus and Lithuania. The total length of the channel is 510 kilometers. Of these, 228 kilometers pass through the lands of Lithuania.
In Lithuania, the river is called Neris and is the second longest Lithuanian river. It connects two large cities - Vilnius and Kernavė. A huge number of mounds, sacred stones and groves have been preserved along the river bank. Several towns are located on the banks of the river: Nemenčine; Vilnius; Grigishkes; Jonava; Kaunas. The largest tributaries are: Sventoji (Sventoji); Jaymen; Voke (Vaka); Vilnia (Vilnia); Saide; Musa.
Venta river
Venta is a river whose bed passes through the territory of Lithuania (here it is called Venta) and Latvia. The total length of Venta is 346 kilometers, of which only 161 kilometers pass through Lithuanian land.
The source of the river is the lakes Mädainis and Väniu (the territory of the emait Upland). During the spring flood, the height of the water in the river rises to 7 meters. Since the direction of the river flow is from south to north, it begins to free itself from ice, starting from its upper reaches. The largest tributaries of the Venta are: Abava; Virvite; Varduva; Vadakste; Tsietsere.
River Nevyazis
The Nevyazis River is located on the territory of Lithuania and is the right tributary of the Neman River. The total length of the current is 210 kilometers.
Nevyazhis runs along the Middle Litovskaya lowland. The freeze-up period occurs in November-January, but the water begins to open in February-April. The main food of the river is melting snow. But besides that, it has about seventy tributaries. Fishing is well developed on the river.
Sheshupe river
Sheshupe carries its waters through the territories of several states. These are Poland, Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region (Russia). The total length of the current is 299 kilometers. Of these, 158 kilometers pass through the lands of Lithuania, of which 51 kilometers are the natural border between Russia and Lithuania.
The source of the river is on the Baltic ridge (near the town of Suvali). The river freezes from about mid-November, and the ice drift begins at the end of February. But these are conditional terms, since everything depends on the onset of frost.
