The cuisine of Armenia is cheeses, herbs, herbs, spices (cilantro, tarragon, basil, cardamom, cloves, thyme, fenugreek, saffron), meat, vegetables, lavash.

National cuisine of Armenia

The visiting card of Armenia is “khorovats” (Armenian shashlik), and its name depends on the method of preparation: for example, the kebab prepared in a saucepan is called “khazani khorovats”, and if on the grill - “karsi khorovats”. In general, meat dishes are treated with great respect here and the following dishes are prepared: “kyufta” (meat balls), “kokolik” (round meatballs in broth), “tolma” (cabbage rolls wrapped in grape leaves), “arisa” (mushy mass based on wheat and chicken meat).

A large role in the country is given to the milk drink matsun (if you dilute it with water, you get tan): it often forms the basis of soups, and also cheese and cottage cheese are made from it. And among the interesting appetizers, it is worth highlighting “baskyrtat”, presented in the form of boiled beef slices (it is mixed with sour cream sauce and ground walnuts).

Popular dishes of Armenian cuisine:

  • “Tisvzhik” (a dish of beef heart, kidneys, lungs and lard with pepper, herbs, tomato puree);
  • Borani (whole chicken fried with eggplant and matsun);
  • “Khash” (soup prepared on lamb or beef legs);
  • “Bozbash” (a dish of boiled lamb with herbs and peas);
  • “Ishkhan khorovats” (Sevan trout fried on a spit).

Where to taste the national cuisine?

Arriving in Armenia, travelers will not have to worry about being offered spicy, fatty or unhealthy dishes (there are no such dishes in Armenian cuisine), and they will not be able to stay hungry at all under any circumstances!

Delicious dishes and evenings with live music will await them in the restaurants of Armenian cuisine (musicians, as a rule, perform national motives).

In Yerevan, one can visit “Old Erivan” (guests are offered to stay in one of 4 halls, for example, “Lights of Erivan” or “Erebuni Erivan”, enjoy Armenian dishes, pleasant atmosphere and live music) and “Ararat” (guests are treated here with kyufta, "Gyumri" cutlets, hash, various barbecue, dishes from Sevan whitefish), and in Vanadzor - "Palma" (the institution pleases visitors with a large selection of meat dishes of Armenian cuisine).
