Existing in some isolation from the rest of the world, Australia is famous not only for its unique natural wonders and animals, which all go around with bags. For a first-time traveler arriving here, the traditions of Australia can also seem very strange and unusual. Customs and habits, like the Australian people themselves, appeared relatively recently, and the culture of the green continent is still in the process of formation and development to this day.

Picnics and horse races

The two undoubted loves of every Australian are horse races and outdoor picnics. And if outings to nature are arranged here with enviable regularity, then there is only one day of the year for racing, which the state declares a day off in the state of Victoria. On the first Tuesday of November, each of its residents, according to a long-standing tradition of Australia, bets on the favorite participating in the Melbourne Cup.

In spring, the country celebrates Veterans Memorial Day. On April 25, everyone who once defended the honor of the country in military conflicts comes to a solemn parade on the streets of cities. After lunch, the celebration of the heroes and friendly gatherings in the bars begin, the doors of which are open on this night until the early morning.

Without a shadow of a hint

Australian tradition is to say what you mean and not use hints. Here, brevity in explanations and descriptions is welcomed, the expression of emotions in public is limited, handshakes are accepted among men and the manifestation of polite concern for the lady.

Australians go to visit by invitation, while the drinks taken with them are regarded as a sign of politeness and good breeding. Good manners oblige the inhabitants of the green continent not to demonstrate their own superiority anywhere.

The center of the world

The Australians consider their mainland the most central on the planet. The feeling of being "on the outskirts" of geographic and political life is completely uncommon for them, and the dislike of the local population to travel to other countries has long been the subject of anecdotes. A popular tradition in Australia is the production of souvenirs with a world map printed on them, on which the green continent is located in the very center.

Not too much popularity of any authorities among Australians leads to the fact that they prefer products of their own production, and they are very skeptical of imported goods.
