Two Latvian words form the name of the most popular beach resort in the Baltics. "Jura" in translation means "sea", and "mala" means "edge". The resulting Jurmala is a city where all the inhabitants of the USSR once aspired to get. Tours to Jurmala were considered more prestigious than even in Sochi, and holidays in the Baltic seemed something special, almost foreign, and therefore so attractive. Today anyone who prefers the quiet and intelligent charm of the northern edge of the austere but hospitable Baltic Sea to the noise and foam of the southern beaches has the opportunity to go to the most resort town in Latvia.
History with geography
Only 25 kilometers separate the beach capital of the country from the political one. Between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe River, there is a generous strip of white sand, framed by dunes covered with pine trees.
The first baths were opened here in the village of Dubulti, and after that, other fishing villages began to become resorts. At the beginning of the 19th century, healing mud and mineral springs were discovered in Kemeri, and it became a resort of the Russian Empire of national importance.
