Belarus has its own currency - the Belarusian ruble. On exchanges, this currency is designated - BYR. History
Own money in Belarus appeared after the collapse of the USSR. The first issue of money was carried out in 1992. Previously, the banknotes were depicted with the image of various animals, now the banknotes have images of famous historical buildings, as well as paintings.
Since the beginning of 2001, notes of 50 kopecks and 3 Belarusian rubles have been excluded from circulation. Then, at the beginning of 2004, a 1 Belarusian ruble note was excluded from circulation, and in the summer of 2005 a 5 Belarusian ruble note was dropped from circulation. On July 1, 2016, the denomination of the Belarusian currency was carried out 10,000 times, while a changeable currency was introduced - a kopeck.
What currency to take to Belarus
Many tourists when traveling to foreign countries have this question. It is difficult to unequivocally answer the question of what currency to take to Belarus. We can confidently offer three options - the Russian ruble, the dollar and the euro.
The import of currency into Belarus is, in fact, unlimited. However, when importing more than 10,000 euros into the republic, you must fill out a special declaration. An amount of up to 3,000 euros can be freely exported from the republic. When exporting up to 10,000, you must fill out a declaration, and when exporting more than 10,000, you will need to submit a document confirming income.
Currency exchange in Belarus
You can exchange imported currency for local currency at one of the bank branches or at specialized exchange offices. It is worth saying that any exchange must be accompanied by an official document confirming the legality of the operation. This document must be saved before leaving the republic. This requirement is associated with the economic crisis in Belarus, due to which the exchange rate does not always correspond to the obvious. In this regard, the "black market" has developed strongly, where the exchange rate is often much more profitable. However, it must be understood that this is illegal. Illegal currency exchange can threaten a tourist with a large fine.
Credit cards
Large shops and hotels accept credit cards of the main payment systems - VISA and MasterCard. Also, in many cities of Belarus there are ATMs, but not many of them work with foreign currency.
