Description of the attraction

Picturesque Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago (Southern Sporades). Every year it is visited by a huge number of tourists who are attracted by the magnificent natural landscapes of the island and the rich cultural and historical heritage. One of the most famous landmarks of the island of Rhodes and its capital is the ancient harbor of Mandraki.

Mandraki Port has been the main harbor of Rhodes for almost 2500 years. Today, on both sides at the entrance to the port, you can see two stone columns on which bronze statues of deer (the symbol of Rhodes) rise. According to legend, in ancient times on the site of the deer was one of the seven wonders of the world - the famous statue of the Colossus of Rhodes. The grandiose monument with a height of 36 meters was a real work of art and was visible even from the nearest islands. Unfortunately, in 222 BC. as a result of a strong earthquake, the statue was destroyed.

On the long breakwater in the harbor, you can still see three magnificently preserved medieval mills from the time of the knightly rule. At the end of the pier there is a fortress of St. Nicholas (part of the city's defensive fortifications) and a lighthouse. Opposite the harbor is the so-called New Market, built by the Italians. This place is popular with both locals and visitors to the city. Here you will find many different shops, as well as restaurants and cafes where you can relax and enjoy excellent Greek cuisine. On the embankment, it is worth visiting the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Cathedral of Rhodes) - a magnificent building in the neo-Gothic style.

Life in Mandraki harbor is in full swing all year round. Fishing boats, yachts and small cruise ships dock here, offering excursions to Rhodes and the surrounding islands.
