Description of the attraction

Khakass National Museum of Local Lore named after L. R. Kyzlasova is not only one of the main attractions of the city of Abakan, but also a visiting card of the Republic of Khakassia.

In December 1928, the Khakass Society of Local History was created. At the beginning of 1929, a museum was opened in the village of Ust-Abakanskoye on a voluntary basis. In July 1931, the local authorities decided to organize a regional museum in Abakan, in the same year the museum was given the status of a state one. The first museum expositions were represented by three departments: history, socialist construction and the nature of the region. Then the institution was located in the building of the House of Culture, but in 1973 it was temporarily transferred to a five-story residential building with an attached two-story exhibition hall. In 2006 the museum was awarded the status of "national", and in October 2007 it was named after the famous scientist, archaeologist L. R. Kyzlasov.

To date, the museum's fund includes about 120 thousand storage units. These are archaeological and ethnographic objects, various documents, art objects, rare books, numismatics, natural science collections and much more. Museum visitors have the opportunity to see a large-scale exposition of the main natural complexes, the diversity of the flora and fauna of Khakassia.

Historical and archaeological museum collections are rich collections of items from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. The real pride of the museum is the amazing collection of stone statues (sculptures), steles and rock paintings. The statues, interesting for their mysterious drawings, are a unique fine art of antiquity, created in the Bronze Age by the bearers of the Okunev culture, who inhabited the Khakass-Minusinsk depression about 5 thousand years ago.

The L. Kyzlasov Museum of Local Lore also presents collections that reflect all the richness of the Khakass culture, for example, the interior of a dwelling, national clothes, various decorations, Khakass embroidery, musical instruments, shamanic attributes, hunting tools, household items, and so on.

Currently, the Khakass National Museum of Local Lore not only serves as a repository for unique collections, but is also one of the main methodological centers for the development and promotion of museum work in the Republic of Khakassia.
