Description of the attraction

The Walker Art Gallery, located in Liverpool, is one of the largest art museums in the UK.

The first collection of paintings, which formed the basis of the future museum, was acquired back in 1819. The success of the 1860 art exhibition at the William Brown Library and Museum led to the opening of the Art Gallery in Liverpool as early as 1877, named for the industrialist and patron Sir Andrew Barclay Walker.

Now in the gallery's collection you can see the best examples of European painting, starting from the XIV century, and British art, including one of the largest collections of the Pre-Raphaelites, is widely represented by painting of the Victorian era. The collection of sculptures displayed in the gallery deserves a special mention.

The gallery also hosts various art exhibitions, mainly dedicated to contemporary art.

Walker Gallery is located on William Brown Street, the only street in the UK with only museums, art galleries and libraries.
