Description of the attraction

In the city of Suzdal there is the Resurrection Church, or, as it is also called, the Church of the Resurrection on the Torga. The temple is located next to the city square, which is not far from the Trade Rows. Its construction took place in 1720. Next to the summer Voskresenskaya church stands Kazanskaya, which is a winter church.

The Resurrection Church is a snow-white temple. Like many temples in the city, it was originally built of wood, but after a while, namely in 1719, when it burned down, it was rebuilt again, only of white brick. The fact that the church was originally wooden is evidenced by some chronicle documents that have survived to this day. Only a large bell remained from the former church, which was cast during the reign of Fyodor Ioannovich - the last son of Ivan the Terrible.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ is made in a laconic architectural form. This building is a rare and very valuable example of a cubic two-pillar temple. The main part of the temple is a high, powerful quadrangle, while its vaults are supported by only a couple of pillars. The roof is hipped, and its wedding is done with a single drum, the decoration of which is made as triangular pediments and platbands. The onion dome, which has a very small size, is placed directly on the drum. The walls of the quadrangle are smooth and decorated with corner pilasters. Window openings do not have platbands, only in the upper part of the church building there is an openwork cornice consisting of keeled kokoshniks.

On the side of the southern façade of the Resurrection Church, a large front porch has been attached, the roof of which is covered with a two-slope roof. On the east side of the temple is the semicircle of the altar, and on the west side there is a rectangular porch, the decor of which is made in the form of a strip of balusters. On the pillars and walls of the Resurrection Church, some fragments of murals dating from the 18th-19th centuries are still preserved.

In the middle of 1739, not far from the summer Resurrection Church, a winter Kazan Church was built, together with which the temple formed a single architectural ensemble. The first mentions of it date back to 1628, when it is described in wood in a scribe's book. Like the Resurrection Church, Kazan Church also burned down in 1719, after which it was decided to build a stone church.

Throughout its existence, it has been rebuilt many times, so it is difficult to judge its original architectural component. The appearance of this temple is quite simple and made in an eclectic style, which is complemented by a lace ridge made of metal, located on the ridge of the roof, which is a characteristic feature of Russian folk art. The temple is made in three parts, and it is based on a pillarless quadrangle, the completion of which is made in the form of a small cupola. From the east, the temple is adjoined by a side-altar with an apse in the form of a semicircle, as well as a bulbous cupola; the vestibule is located on the west side. With the help of the portal, the side-chapel was decorated, consisting of rounded columns supported by an impressive triangular pediment.

Near the north-western corner of the porch of the Resurrection Church there is a bell tower, built along with the temple, which is a large quadrangle, exposed on an octahedron. Initially, the bell tower was small, but over time, it was decided to build another tier over the octagon, which was later decorated with glazed tiles and square niches. The wedding of the bell tower was carried out in accordance with the traditions of the capital city of St. Petersburg - it is crowned with a spherical vane roof equipped with a high spire. Since that time, in Suzdal, the usual completion of the temples was carried out in the form of a tent, but in this case the architects decided to follow the "new trends in fashion." It should be noted that the bell tower is the dominant component not only of the temple ensemble, but of the entire shopping area.

Today, for a certain amount, you can visit the bell tower and see the nearest surroundings from it.
