Description of the attraction
The Independence Monument, or "Vas Ekarich", is located in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. It was erected in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia's independence five years earlier. The monument is located in the city center, at the junction of Norodom and Sihanouk boulevards. The Independence Monument was built in the form of a traditional Khmer lotus stupa, to some it looks more like a pineapple. The style of the building was not chosen by chance, it resembles the great Khmer temple of Angkor Wat and other historical buildings. The Independence Monument was designed by contemporary Cambodian architect Vann Molyvan.
During public holidays, this symbol of Cambodia's Independence becomes the central object around which residents and guests of the city gather. Inside the pedestal on these days, members of the royal family or high government officials light a solemn fire, and people bring flowers to the stairs.
The Independence Monument is one of Cambodia's most photographed and visited landmarks and is featured on local currency and postcards. It is forbidden to climb the stairs to the pedestal, but you can take photos and videos.
