Description of the attraction
While in Montenegro, do not forget to visit the dilapidated fortress Hai-Nehai, which is located on the mountain of the same name, at an altitude of approximately 180 m above sea level, not far from the cities of Sutomore and Bar.
Back in 1542, the first mentions of this fortress appeared. "Fear, do not be afraid" - this is how the name Hai-Nehai sounds in translation. From the side it seems that the fortress stands on a steep cliff. The winged lion, the coat of arms of the Venetian Republic, is carved in stone over the main gate of the Hai Nehai fortress.
You can get inside only from the western side, where there is an entrance, the rest of the fortress walls are impregnable. You can climb directly to the entrance only along a winding and narrow path that starts on the left side of the mountain. The fortress could accommodate up to 900 people.
Here, at the highest point of Mount Hai-Nehai, in the 13th century was the church of St. Demetrius, erected before the construction of the fortress itself. In ancient times it had 2 altars: Orthodox and Catholic. Only the ruins of this church have survived to this day.
Over the course of several centuries, the fortress passed into the possession of either the Venetians or the Turks, who conquered it as a result of bloody battles, so buildings of three different cultures can be seen on the territory: Turkish, Venetian and Montenegrin.
