Description of the attraction

The Devil's Bridge is one of the sights of the Northern Rhodope, located in the Kardzhal region, about 10 kilometers west of Ardino, in a small gorge. The bridge is currently not being used for its intended purpose.

The bridge was erected in the period from 1515 to 1518, in its place there was an old Roman bridge connecting the Gorno-Thracian lowland and the coast of the Aegean Sea through the Makaza pass. The builder was the master Dimitar from Nedelino (in the 16th century it was still a village, now it is a city).

The height of the structure is 420 meters; steep slopes cover the bridge on both sides. The bridge is almost 60 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. The three-vaulted bridge is equipped on the lateral sides with semicircular openings for water outflow. The central vault reaches a height of 12 meters, along the edges of the vault, twelve centimeters of stone railings have survived to this day

Since 1984, the Devil's Bridge has been elevated to the status of a cultural monument. You can get here on foot or by car along a dirt road from Ardino. Not far from the tourist attraction, there are places for tourists with a hearth and a canopy - here you can have a small picnic or just take a break after a long journey.
