Description of the attraction
The seaside town of Cascais in Portugal has been known since the days when prehistoric tribes lived on the territory. The city is located on the ocean coast, 30 km from Lisbon. Cascais received the status of a city in the middle of the XIV century, and before that it was considered a small village in which fishing and agriculture flourished. Even today, fishing is an important industry for this city.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cascais became famous for being the seat of the Portuguese royal family. And from that time on, the city began to develop a tourist destination. Today, the city is considered a popular vacation or weekend destination for both Portuguese and foreign tourists. The city has many beautiful historical sites and monuments, as well as it is surrounded on three sides by the ocean. There are many good sandy beaches, especially on the Estoril coast. For water sports enthusiasts, Cascais is the ideal destination. Regattas and international competitions are organized on the Estoril coast. The west coast is especially appreciated by kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts due to the constant large waves, and competitions in these sports are also often held there.
Three kilometers from the city, a little to the west, there is a cliff. But it is the grotto created by the beating waves that attracts the attention of many tourists. The grotto is called Boca do Inferno, which means "Devil's mouth". There is another name for the grotto - "The Gates of Hell". The grotto got this name due to the fact that the waves hit the rock with great force and create an incredible roar and noise.
