Description of the attraction
The Evangelical Church of Theodorskirche (St. Theodor Church) is located in the Wettstein district on the Teodorskirchplatz. The first written records of this church date back to 1084. It is known that she was among the possessions of the monastery of Saint Alban. Over time, it lost most of its parishioners, and at the same time, church taxes due to its remote location from the built bridge over the Rhine, and then it was completely abandoned. In the twentieth century, archaeologists found burials dating back to the 8th century within the walls of the church.
The church suffered significant losses during the earthquake of 1356 - then there was a partial collapse of the towers and the altar almost completely collapsed. Only the north tower was restored.
Today, in the church you can see a pulpit, built in the 15th century, on which bas-reliefs in the form of an angel, a lion, a bull and an eagle, symbolizing the four evangelists - Mark, Matthew, John and Luke, have been preserved. There is also a 15th century baptismal font depicting the coat of arms of the Kilchmann family. This family made a substantial donation for the creation of the font. For them, special seats with family coats of arms were installed, which have survived to this day. An organ is installed on a special elevation on the western wall.
It is noteworthy that a window has been cut through on the eastern wall of the southern side nave. This was done so that the sick and lepers could also participate in the service without becoming a threat to healthy parishioners.
