Description of the attraction
The Kedah State Museum is a beautiful structure of Alor Setar, in white and pink colors, with tall graceful columns that adorn the entrance. The building was constructed in 1936 under the influence of the styles of Thai palace architecture.
The State Museum was moved to this building in 1964 - seven years after the foundation of the museum's collection. The design work continued for another dozen years.
Today the museum is a center accumulating information about Kedah, the northernmost state of Malaysia. Archaeological excavations in the state confirm that it is the cradle of ancient Buddhist civilization. It was here that merchants from India first met the local population. The main peak of Kedakh, Mount Jerai, has served as a landmark for sailors since the 5th century. And the harbor of the island of Langkawi, Kuala Muda, has received traders who traveled to the countries of the East since ancient times. The exposition of the museum tells about all this.
During the work of the museum, it has collected a huge number of artifacts that tell about the long history of the state, its cultural and economic heritage. Here you can see the results of excavations in the famous Bujang Valley, porcelain and ceramics from ancient times, and other historical relics.
The exposition contains many evidences of the vassal position of the Sultanate of Kedah in the 7th-8th centuries, when it was necessary to pay tribute to Sumatra. Shows the centuries-old history of being under the rule of Siam, the revival of Malacca, Portuguese, then British colonization. Hard years of the Japanese occupation. Become a state of the Malay Federation.
A separate section is devoted to the history of the Kedakh Sultan family.
Today, the state is not only rural, which feeds the entire country with rice. New branches of business and industry are actively developing in Kedakh, especially in its capital. Langkawi Island has long been an international tourist destination. Therefore, visiting the museum is especially interesting - it illustrates the entire evolution of this state.
