Description of the attraction

The spa town of Bad Schönau is located 110 km from Vienna on the border with Hungary. Only 731 people permanently live in it, but thousands of people come every year to improve their health. Cozy sanatoriums offering treatments with carbon dioxide, mineral water and healing clay are surrounded by a large spa park with golf and tennis courses. The local springs, which have a high carbon dioxide content, are unique in Austria. This healing moisture began to be widely used in 1950. Water and dry gas baths help with impaired metabolism, vascular and heart diseases, diseases of the spine.

The land on which the Bad Schönau resort now stands was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noric many years ago. A Celtic settlement was built here. Then the Romans came here and founded the province of Pannonia. Until now, archaeologists find important historical evidence of those eras in the vicinity of the resort.

There are two churches in Bad Schönau - one is old, built between 1200 and 1250, and the other is modern, dating from 1968. A small vegetable garden is planted between them. The older church of Saints Peter and Paul once served as a refuge during Turkish raids. It contains the altar of the Holy Trinity created in 1689. In 1987, during renovations, frescoes from 1320 were discovered in this church. They were carefully restored.

The second city church, built in the second half of the 20th century by the project of the architect Josef Strauss, was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. Erwin Plevan worked on the interior design.
