The Regional Historical Museum of the Bulgarian Blagoevgrad is located in the old quarter of Varosha, in one of the most interesting areas of the city. The buildings here were mainly erected at the beginning of the 19th century, the building of the historical museum was built in the style of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The rich museum fund demonstrates the rich history of the Pirin region.

The Blagoevgrad Historical Museum was founded in 1952. There are several departments here: ethnographic, archaeological, "Bulgarian lands of the 15th - early 20th centuries", "Art", "Nature", "New, Contemporary History". The museum also has several scientific laboratories, in which the restoration and restoration of exhibits takes place, as well as a library containing about 17 thousand volumes.

The museum contains more than one hundred thousand exhibits related to various historical eras. Blagoevgrad is located on the site of an ancient Thracian settlement, in the museum you can study archaeological finds dating back to this time (approximately 4-3 centuries BC): weapons, bronze armor, hammered masks, coins, jewelry, tools and medical devices. Also in the exposition of the museum are ancient artifacts - finds from the excavations of the necropolis of the village of Rupite, the ancient city of Melnik and the Samuil fortress.

A unique collection of exhibits is kept in the basement of the Blagoevgrad Museum. This is a set of so-called vowed figurines, the time of creation of which is 6th century. BC. Historians believe that the ancient Thracians used these items for religious rituals and prayers for bountiful harvests.

In addition, the ethnographic department of the museum contains a rich collection of costumes of townspeople, fabrics, dishes and household appliances made of ceramics, glass, wood and metal at the turn of the 20th century. It also displays personal belongings of activists of the Bulgarian revolutionary liberation movement, samples of jewelry and printing art of Bulgarian masters from different historical periods. The fund of the museum contains 23 paintings by Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, 86 photographs by Vladimir Dimitrov and many other works of art.

To popularize museum work, science and history, the Regional History Museum hosts conferences and various educational events. The museum has received many awards and certificates, as well as various distinctions.
