Description of the attraction

Frurio Hill (sometimes also called Fortress Hill) is a historical site in Larissa. The first signs of an urban settlement, found here, date back to the Neolithic period; a later structure, the ancient citadel of the city, is located on the southern side, where the ancient theater is located.

In the Byzantine period, the city was a center of trade, and in the Ottoman period it was also a stronghold of defense. Today, on the hillock, you can see the poor fortress, which was built by the Turks at the end of the 15th century and served as a covered market. After some structural changes and refurbishments, it was used as a gunpowder store and command center, which played an important role in the liberation of Thessaly in 1881 (the current appearance of the building is the one in which it resided in the 19th century). In addition, under the buildings of the 17-19 centuries. the remains of an early Christian basilica have been found. It is believed that this is the first church in the city of Agios Achileos, built in the 6th century AD. NS. Here they also found a necropolis with burials, one of which, probably, could belong to the holy defender of the city, in whose honor this church was consecrated.

Fonts and baths, parts of marble columns, capitals, drainage systems, remnants of city fortifications and residential buildings of the early Christian and Byzantine eras were found on the eastern side of the Turkish citadel, next to the basilica.

Frurio Hill is a unique place, one of the most important monuments of the city, giving an idea of the different periods of its history.
