Description of the attraction
The State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after Solomiya Krushelnitskaya was built in 1897-1900 by Z. Gorgolevsky. The opening of the theater, on October 4, 1900, gathered all the cultural elite of that time - artists, writers, composers, as well as delegations from various European theaters. Its first name - the Bolshoi City Theater - the theater bore until 1939.
The opera house was built in the classical tradition, using forms and details from architectural styles such as the Renaissance and Baroque, as well as the Viennese Neo-Renaissance. The facade of the theater is decorated with three sculptures: Drama, Genius and Music. Below them in the tympanum is the composition "The Joy and Suffering of Life", and above the cornice there are statues of eight muses.
The interior of the theater is striking in its richness and beauty. The foyer, corridor and staircase are designed so that during the day they are perfectly illuminated through the windows and the glass roof by the light from the windows, and at night - by the light of the lanterns. The most interesting is the luxurious Hall of Mirrors located on the second floor. The ceiling plafonds depict the images of Poetry, Dance, Music, Love, Hatred, Wisdom and Justice. The amphitheater is built in the shape of a lyre and can accommodate one thousand spectators. In the center there is a sculptural composition Genius and an Angel with the coat of arms of Lviv.
