Description of the attraction

The Krasinski Palace is a baroque palace located in Warsaw on Krasinski Square.

The palace was built in 1677-83 by the architect Tillman Gameren for the Krasinski family. The sculptures that adorn the palace were made by the German sculptor Andreas Schlüter. The interior, in particular the frescoes, was the work of the court painter Michelangelo Palloni. The interior work was completed in 1699. The owner of the palace was a connoisseur and collector of painting, so the interiors display an impressive collection of works by Albrecht Durer, Antonio da Correggio, Rubens.

In 1765, the palace was bought by the state to be housed in the building of the treasury. After a fire in 1783, the palace was partially rebuilt in accordance with the project of the architect Domenico Merlini, after which it housed the court. In 1944, the palace was destroyed by the German army, and restoration began after the end of the war.

Today the Krasinski Palace is part of the Polish National Library, which houses a unique collection of manuscripts and old prints. The collection of medieval manuscripts, as well as thematic collections of the period of the Great Emigration, are a subject of special pride.
