Description of the attraction
The Church of St. Catherine, located in the Crimean resort town of Feodosia, is one of the most beautiful city attractions. The second name of the temple is St. Catherine's Church.
The foundation stone of the temple was carried out on April 21, 1892 - on the birthday of the Russian Empress Catherine II. The construction was carried out with funds donated by residents of the city for the construction of the temple, as well as in memory of the annexation of Crimea to Russia.
Church of St. Catherine is a vivid example of Russian religious architecture, it was built in the architectural traditions of the 17th century. The base of the church is an equilateral cross. The entrance to the temple is on the west side and is framed by a portico with an elegant belfry decorated with low columns. Church of st. Catherine is overshadowed by five domes covered with stars. The top of the temple is decorated with patterned kokoshniks of various sizes, repeating the shape of the domes. Light enters the church through tall rectangular windows in the walls, as well as through carved lancet windows located on the central golden dome. Church of st. Catherine has a festive, solemn, view from the outside and rich decoration inside.
Since 1901, priest Andrei Kosovsky was the rector of the church. In 1920 he was arrested. It happened on the day of commemoration of the holy Great Martyr Catherine. After a long time in captivity, Father Andrei was shot. In 2000, the synodal commission decided to canonize Father Andrei Kosovsky.
In 1937 the temple, like many other Russian churches, was closed and turned into a warehouse. Four years later, it was reopened by the occupying German authorities. Since that time, it has been one of the active churches in the Crimea.
In 1999, another church was added to the St. Catherine's Church - in the name of St. John the Baptist, where the baptismal and Sunday school were located. In 2002, a whole complex was erected, which included premises for a Sunday school, a methodological office, libraries and hotels.
