Description of the attraction

The Tver Imperial Traveling Palace, an architectural monument of the 18th century, is located in the historical center of Tver. The palace with two pavilions was built in 1764-1766 in the classicism style with baroque elements according to the project of M. F. Kazakov. The palace was intended for the rest of the members of the imperial family on the way from St. Petersburg to Moscow, from where it got its name. On February 12, 1767, Empress Catherine II first arrived at the Tver Travel Palace and gave dinner to local nobles.

The palace was rebuilt by K. I. Rossi at the beginning of the 19th century. At that time, the sister of Alexander I, Ekaterina Pavlovna, who was married to the Tver governor, lived here, who turned the palace into one of the centers of the country's social life and a fashionable literary salon, where the high society of Tver gathered and where many prominent people from Moscow and St. Petersburg came.

In the fall of 1941, the building was partially destroyed by the Nazis, in 1942-1948. restored. Currently, the Travel Palace houses the Art Gallery, a historical and architectural museum.

The Tver Picture Gallery is one of the oldest and largest museum collections in Russia. The gallery was founded in 1866. At present, the Tver Regional Picture Gallery is a wide-profile art museum. The collection of the gallery presents: Russian cult art of the XIV - XX centuries, Russian painting, graphics and engraving of the XVIII - XX centuries, Russian sculpture of the XVIII - XX centuries, Russian furniture of the XVIII - XX centuries, Western European painting, graphics and engraving of the XVI - XX centuries, Western European sculpture of the XVIII - XX centuries, Western European furniture of the XVI - XIX centuries, decorative and applied art of Russia, Western Europe, the East. Here you can see unique ancient icons and frescoes by Tver masters, paintings by F. Rokotov, A. Venetsianov, I. Levitan and others.
