Description of the attraction
Valley of the Moon is one of the most visited places in San Pedro, located 17 km from the city, in the Cordillera de la Sal, Andes. This is an interesting cluster of rocks, sand and salt, polished by winds and water for thousands of years, which plays with an overflow of all kinds of colors and textures.
El Valle de la Luna is attractive for its amazing resemblance to the surface of the moon. Climbing a large sand dune, you can appreciate the wonderful and wonderful world that stretches to the horizon. Around, wherever you look, breathtaking landscapes, reminiscent of fragments of the lunar landscape.
There are dry lakes in the Moon Valley, where salt covers the rock with a beautiful white mantle. The slopes of the rocks play in the rays of the sun in all colors: green, blue, red, yellow. The shapes of the rocks are amazing and varied, which change a thousand times during the day, but look especially fantastic at dusk. On moonlit nights, the valley also has an indescribable view - coldly beautiful, imposing and full of grandeur in its silence.
This area is one of the driest on earth. Some parts of it have not seen a single drop of precipitation for several centuries. Scientists tested a prototype rover in the valley, on a difficult rocky-salt surface.
In 1982, Lunar Valley was declared a natural monument. It is also part of the Los Flamencos National Park. Hundreds of tourists visit it every year as one of the most amazing sights in Chile.
