Description of the attraction

The Museum of South Karelia, founded in 1963, is a part of the museum complex of the city of Lappeenranta. It is housed in ancient 19th century limestone buildings intended for artillery warehouses on the territory of the Linnoitus fortress.

The museum contains exhibits directly related to the history of South Karelian culture and the culture of the Karelian Isthmus, represented by the cities of Lapeenranta, Vyborg and Priozersk. The folk costumes of the inhabitants of this region, the model of the pre-war Vyborg and other exhibits make it possible to better know the life of the city of that time.

Another museum exhibition is dedicated to the origins of the city of Lappeenranta, archaeological finds that reveal the history of the development of transport in ancient trade, economic and international relations.

The museum also hosts other historical exhibitions that tell about the times when this territory belonged to the Swedish Kingdom and the Russian Empire.

The Museum of South Karelia provides special excursions for children and playrooms. The shop sells souvenirs, jewelry, as well as books, postcards, sweets and jewelry.
