Before the official start of the war on the territory of the USSR, the Brest Fortress was bombed on September 2, 1939. The Brest Fortress suffered an artillery attack in the first hours of the Great Patriotic War. Due to the sudden, well-organized massive fire, the defenders of the Brest Fortress were taken by surprise. The water supply system, warehouses were destroyed, communication was interrupted. The surviving defenders of the Brest Fortress died, suffering from hunger and thirst.

For heroic resistance to the Brest Fortress in 1965 he was awarded the title "Fortress-Hero". During the Soviet era, the Brest Fortress received a lot of attention and funds, so the memorial complex and museum make a strong impression.
