Description of the attraction

The building of the Art Gallery (Kunsthalle) in Bern was built in 1917-18. at the initiative of the Kunsthalle Bern Association. It was intended for a wide variety of art exhibitions. In October 1918, the local newspaper wrote: "Bern has become a city of art."

The gallery specializes mainly in contemporary art. Over the years of her work, such masters as Paul Klee, Christo, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, Jasper Jones, Bruce Nauman and others have exhibited here.

In 1988, a private Foundation for the Art Gallery was formed, which works in close cooperation with the Art Museum of Bern. The Foundation's mission is to acquire and preserve outstanding works that have been shown at the exhibitions of the Art Gallery, thus forming a significant collection of examples of contemporary art; then these works of art become exhibits of exhibitions in the Art Museum. Now the gallery hosts not only art exhibitions, but also film screenings, musical evenings, etc.

The gallery conducts organized excursions, there are separate excursion programs for children. There are special excursions for teachers who can then visit the gallery with their students without being accompanied by a guide. The gallery works closely with art educational institutions and provides their students with its own rooms for work. Separate programs for seniors provide an opportunity to admire the exhibits while sitting, and then discuss what they saw over a cup of tea or coffee.
