Description of the attraction

The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, called SMAK for short, was founded in 1957 in Ghent. It is the successor of the Museum of Modern Art, which did not have its own building and occupied only a few rooms in the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1999, a building was finally found for the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, erected in 1949 as a casino. It is located in the Citadel Park - opposite the Museum of Fine Arts.

The museum houses a huge collection of contemporary European art dating from the 1950s to the present. Here you can see the works of Ilya Kabakov, Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Juan Muñoz. Many works of art were created by Belgian artists: Marcel Broodthaers, Thierry de Cordier, Hugo Debaer, Luc Teymans.

The replenishment of the museum collection is carried out with the help of caring citizens who are members of the SMAK Association.

The Museum of Contemporary Art collaborates with many talented people who often organize personal or thematic exhibitions here. Each such temporary exhibition is the # 1 event in Ghent, for which the entire elite gathers. Traditional paintings or sculptures are rarely on display here. Basically, modern authors make interesting installations out of paper, iron, feathers, and fabric. Any material is used. All exhibitions surprise, amaze, make people talk about themselves, but never leave you indifferent. They are dedicated to current events and raise issues of concern to society.
