The area can accommodate up to 1 million people, it is the largest in the world. The square acquired its truly enormous dimensions after 1949.
Tiananmen Square was built at the beginning of the 15th century, at that stage it was much smaller. Most likely, Emperor Ju Di, who decided to found the area, was fascinated by gigantomania to a much lesser extent in comparison with Mao Zedong's henchmen, who expanded the area to 44 hectares at the end of the 50s of the last century.
In the center of the square there is a massive Monument to the People's Heroes. Its bas-reliefs reflect the most important stages of the revolutionary struggle of the country's people. On the south side of the square is the House of Memory of Mao Zedong, which was opened in August 1977. Its central part is set aside for a memorial hall, where the remains of the famous leader are kept. The building also houses a number of memorial halls dedicated to the lives of Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlan, Zhu Te and other famous revolutionary figures.
On the western side of the square is the Assembly House of People's Representatives, and on the eastern side - the country's Historical Museum and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.
At the hour of sunrise and sunset, a solemn ceremony of raising and lowering the national flag of the country is held daily on Tiananmen Square. The pomp of this ceremony attracts a lot of attention from both tourists and patriotic locals. Many try to take a place in advance, located closer to the state shrine.
The special atmosphere in the square is created by the kite launchers. Tiananmen is a great place to watch this traditional Chinese fun. On holidays, the square is decorated with lanterns and flowers.
