Description of the attraction

The small pine-covered island of Vidos is just half a mile from the Old Harbor of Corfu Town. Known in ancient times as the island of Gera Vidos, it has an important place in the history of Corfu.

Around 80 A. D. the first Christian church of St. Stephen was built here. But unfortunately, the temple has not survived to this day, as it was destroyed by the British. Ancient vessels were found in the ruins under the mosaic floor. This suggests that the church was built on the ruins of an older temple.

During the Venetian domination (15-18 centuries) a special tunnel was created that connected Vidos with the island of Corfu. Convicted criminals from the Old Fortress were transported through this tunnel to the island, which was a kind of "Alcatraz" for Corfu. Some remnants of prison structures have survived to this day.

The island of Vidos has always been a strategically important object in the defense of Corfu. After the Venetians, the island was thoroughly fortified by the French, from whom the name remained. Later, the British captured Vidos and destroyed almost all the old buildings and fortifications. In 1824, large-scale construction began, for which the UK allocated an astronomical amount of money. So the island of Vidos turned into an impregnable fortress with a perfect defense system. However, after the annexation of the island of Corfu to Greece, the fortifications were destroyed.

On the island is the Serbian Mausoleum - a monument to 1232 Serbian soldiers who died of plague and hunger while defending the island of Corfu. There are always flowers, candles, as well as photographs and a special Commemorative Book in which you can write your gratitude.

Today the picturesque island of Vidos is a favorite tourist destination. Pine forests and secluded beaches create a unique atmosphere. And in the only tavern you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine and beautiful views of the sea and the city of Corfu.
