Description of the attraction
The Penza River Embankment is one of the oldest streets in the city, formed in 1819. In 1945, having changed its course, the Sura River replaced the Penza River in the section from Bakunin Street to Uritskogo Street, leaving only the name of the embankment as a memory.
In the 1970s, a pedestrian suspension bridge, about 300 meters long, was built on the embankment, which was recognized at one time as the best engineering structure in the USSR. In 2008, during the Congress of the Council of Europe in Penza, it was decided to name the suspended structure - a meeting place for initiative youth - to be called the Bridge of Friendship.
Today the embankment and the suspension bridge are one of the most beautiful places in Penza, a meeting place for lovers, newlyweds and photographers. On the bridge, they make dates and meet friends, retirees and young parents with children breathe fresh air, admire the panoramic beauties that open from the bridge, local residents and guests of the city. At night, the lights of the bridge and the surrounding area are turned on, turning a part of the city near the Sura River into a fabulously beautiful place.
During the warmer months, summer cafes are open on the embankment, boat trips along the river are organized on a river tram and a speedboat. On holidays, fireworks and salutes are fired over the Sura, reflected in the river and making them unusually bright and spectacular. On such days, the suspension bridge is especially crowded.
