Description of the attraction

India's independence process was difficult and lengthy. One of the main characters who contributed to the embodiment of this cherished dream for many Indian residents into reality was a man named Jawaharlal Nehru. He later became the first prime minister of an already independent state. The people of India remember and love this public and political figure, therefore, after his death in 1964, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Museum and Library was founded in order to preserve the history of the popular freedom movement.

The Museum is an autonomous organization created on the basis of the Ministry of Culture of India on the territory of Teen Murti House - the residence of the first Prime Minister. This building was built in 1929 for the commander-in-chief of the British Army, and is now a center for the study of modern Indian history. The west wing of Teen Murti House is dedicated to the library, and the east wing is occupied by a museum.

The library of the memorial contains many documents, books, manuscripts and letters, which, interestingly, since 2011, can be viewed online. Also there are books and manuscripts of Jawaharlal Nehru himself, and their translations into various foreign languages.

In the museum you can see photographs, personal belongings of Jawaharlal Nehru, gifts that the heads of different states gave him. Also part of the museum is the Planetarium located in the Teen Murti House.

After the creation of the memorial museum, such a huge number of exhibits were collected that it became necessary to build an additional building for their storage. Therefore, by 1989, another building was erected nearby, in which the Center for Contemporary Studies was located.

Every year on April 1, the day the museum was founded, the Day of the Annual Lecture is organized, which is dedicated to Jawaharlal Nehru.
