Description of the attraction

Foch Palace is located on Rashtauradores Square. Previously, the palace was the residence of the Marquis of Foch, but now the building houses the National Tourism and Information Office, as well as a repository of film and photo materials for children. From the palace begins the central street of Lisbon - Avenida da Liberdade, Liberty Avenue.

The palace, which was built by the Italian architect Francesco Savario Fabri, was bought shortly after the earthquake in 1755 by the Marquis de Castelo Melior. The construction took a very long time - from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th centuries. The building impresses with a variety of architectural styles: the style of the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque style of the 17th century. The facade of the building is covered with painted external plaster and frescoes, which reflect the strict severity of the Italian straight architectural lines and give a certain charm to the exterior of the building.

The palace got its name in honor of the Marquis of Foch, who inherited this palace in 1869. The interior of the palace, as well as its furniture, are made in the spirit of the Palace of Versailles. The Renaissance greenhouse room, the Mirror Room and the atrium of the Chapel of the Immaculate Virgin Mary deserve the attention of tourists when visiting the Foch Palace. At the beginning of the twentieth century, some of the rooms of this palace were used for theatrical performances, film screenings, and various dance shows.

It should be noted that the palace is not open for free visits. In order to visit the palace, you need to obtain a special permit.
