Description of the attraction
Bali Museum is located on Mayor Vishnu Street, directly in the center of Denpasar. On the north side of the museum is the majestic building of the famous Jagatnakhta Temple, and directly opposite the museum is Puputan Badung Square and the Katur Muk statue. The statue of Katur Muk is a four-faced guard, whose height reaches 5 meters.
The museum was founded in 1910, and the purpose of the Bali Museum was to preserve the cultural heritage of the Bali island. The initiators of the creation of the museum were the Dutch representatives of the colonial administration, and the kings of some specific kingdoms and the principality of Bali, as well as architects and other representatives of culture. In 1917, the Gunung Batur volcano erupted and the building was destroyed. In 1925 a new building was built, but it was used more as an exhibition complex due to the fact that the museum's collection, including historical materials and documents, artifacts and antiques, was not complete enough. In December 1932, the official opening of the Bali Museum took place, the architecture of which combines elements of the palace and temple architecture of Bali.
The exhibits of the museum tell the history of the island of Bali, starting from prehistoric times. There are bronze statues in the collection, among which you can see a statue of Buddha, items for religious ceremonies (all kinds of masks), items from the ethnographic collection and much more. Among the collection of paintings there are works by unknown masters who painted scenes from the Ramayana with mineral paints on rice paper, as well as paintings by famous authors of the twentieth century.
