Description of the attraction
The Grodno State Historical and Archaeological Museum was opened on December 9, 1922 in the house of the former vice-governor on the initiative and under the leadership of an outstanding historian, archaeologist and local historian Jozef Yodkovsky. He laid the foundation for an impressive museum collection, carrying out archaeological excavations of the Lower Church of the 12th century, collecting unique art objects, old books and coins.
In 1926, the museum was replenished with a collection of insects, minerals and shells, which Stanislav Zhivna brought from America and donated to the museum. Now the natural exposition is located in the branch of the museum in the New Castle.
Unfortunately, during the years of the Nazi occupation during the Great Patriotic War, the museum funds suffered greatly from the predatory plundering of the invaders. The restoration of the museum began immediately after the liberation of Grodno from the Nazi troops. The doors of the museum were reopened to visitors in 1945.
Now the Grodno State Historical and Archival Museum has one of the most impressive collections in the Republic of Belarus. Its funds include more than 190 thousand exhibits.
