Description of the attraction

Kolotsky Assumption Monastery was founded in 1413 by Prince. Andrey Dmitrievich Mozhaisky on the occasion of the appearance on the river. Kolochi of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Already in the XV century. the monastery was rich and "great." It had 2 stone churches: the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the side-altar of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Epiphany Church, as well as the Church of St. Alexia, Met. Moscow, under the bell tower. In 1609, during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention, the monastery was destroyed.

In 1812 the monastery became an outpost of the Russian position on the eve of the Battle of Borodino. With the withdrawal of the Russian troops, the headquarters of Napoleon was located in the monastery. After the Battle of Borodino, a French hospital was established here. Restoration work at the monastery was completed in 1839.

After the revolution of 1917, the monastery was abolished. The last of its inhabitants were shot by the Bolsheviks on suspicion of counter-revolutionary activities. The original Kolochskaya icon was lost in the 1970s. Now only a few late lists are known. In October 1997, the monastery was opened as an independent one. Construction and repair works are being carried out in the monastery, the territory is being improved.

In the center of the monastery is the Assumption Cathedral, built in 1626 and later rebuilt in the Baroque style. A three-tiered square bell tower crowned with a high spire rises above the Holy Gates. At the end of the 18th century, the abbot's building and one-story cells were built.
