Description of the attraction
Located east of Corle Lagoon, Jamestown is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Accra. The community at this place settled in the 17th century around the British Fort James, built on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. The settlement grew to a large extent in the late 19th century, and after the development and expansion of urban boundaries in the 20th century, Jamestown became a mixture of a commercial and densely populated residential area. Today the fishing communities remain the main population of Jamestown.
Despite the fact that the area is desolate and considered poor, it is popular with tourists. Remnants of the country's colonial past are preserved here in the form of the original building of the Jamestown Light lighthouse, built by the British next to the fortress in 1871, and reconstructed and moved in the 1930s. The height of the structure is 28 m, and the luminous flux extends over a distance of up to 30 km. You can climb to the observation deck to see all the surroundings, the bay and fishing boats.
Other attractions include Fort James, the old customs house, Makola market # 2. A special feature of the area is the palace of the local king - a blue colonial-style building, decorated with relief paintings and primitive sculptures of lions at the entrance. It is located next to the football field.
The Ghanaian government had plans to make large-scale investments in the development of Jamestown, but so far there are not enough funds for the project.
